Sell Us Your Books!

Our current in-store book buyback hours are every Thursday between 2pm and 6pm. If you have five boxes or less please feel free to stop in during these hours. No appointment necessary! If you have a quantity greater than five boxes, please contact the book buy team at bookbuyer @ midtownscholar.com. Please include a total number of books, where the collection is located and reference photos of the collection. 

If it is your first time bringing books to us, please come in the front entrance and speak with a member of the cafe staff to be pointed in the right direction. If you require assistance unloading, please park on Susquehanna Street or in our parking lot located behind the store. 

What we love to add to our selection: 

• Art Books on Specific Topics 

• Scholarly Titles and University Presses 

• Historical Titles - Especially on Pennsylvania and Harrisburg

• Notable Authors - Including Works by Prize Winning Authors

• Fantasy and Science Fiction 

• Literature and Classics 

• Rare or Antiquarian Books - Including Ephemera, Maps, Interesting Manuscripts, and Prints Uncommon Titles and Subject Areas -

• Books on Highly Specialized Topics

• Graphic Novels and Manga 

• Small Press Titles

The following are less desirable, but still viable for evaluation:

• “Old Books” - unless they are rare or collectible. Being older does not necessarily make a book valuable. It must be in demand and be of interest to today’s readers. 

• Mass Market Paperbacks 

• Damaged Books - Please note, we do not take books that are dirty, very worn, water damaged, missing parts or have mildew and tobacco odors or staining. 

• College and High School Textbooks Magazines, Encyclopedias or DVD’s/CD’s

Pricing: 

The pricing of books is determined by the resale value of your items. If we can sell a book for seven dollars or less we would only pay between twenty-five cents or a dollar, depending on condition and desirability. If a book can be resold for ten dollars or more we will offer a reasonable percentage of our perceived retail price. We can not give an accurate value of a book over the phone or based on a personal description. Once a value is determined you have the option of receiving cash or store credit. 

Large Quantities: 

If you are moving, cleaning out your library or simply downsizing and have a large quantity of books that you are unable to bring to the store please contact us including the information requested above. You will be referred to the book buying team to start the process. Please note we only make house calls by appointment for large or unusual collections that are valuable to the store. 

Donations: 

The Scholar will accept books as donations at our discretion. If there are certain books you bring to our book buyback hours that we cannot purchase, but you would still like to give a new home we can take them as donations. If you are simply looking to donate books without receiving payment please stop in during our buyback hours for evaluation.
